Kids Spaces + More from JCI

Hello and happy Wednesday! We’re halfway through the week and I don’t know about you, but it’s been a good one so far for us. Here in Nashville, the first phases of shops and restaurants started opening up last week so the world seems to be returning to normalcy in some ways for sure. Last week we posted a photo of a little boy’s room from a project and were shocked by how many of you sent messages asking us to share more ideas and links for kids spaces! We always love to help you all get inspiration and ideas for your own home, so this week on the blog we wanted to share some of our favorite pieces of art for kids spaces. Everything is affordable because we know that few people want to invest in expensive art for a space that is bound to transform as your little ones grow. We’ve linked everything here for you and will include some photos of some of our kids spaces for inspiration!

Fashion to Home | Splurge to Save + More from JCI

Well hello, friends! We hope your week is off to a wonderful start and Mother’s Day weekend was fabulous! We are excited to be back in the office as of last week as client projects ramp up and are thrilled to have clients who are just as enthusiastic as we are about continuing work on their projects. This week, we thought it would be really fun to connect fashion staples to home staples to show you how items in our closets connect to home decor. For many, fashion sense comes much easier than understanding home styling and what to splurge vs. save on. Here’s how Julie defines and connects fashion to home: splurge to save.

Hello everyone and happy Wednesday! Hope your week is off to a great start and you’re still staying sane during all of the craziness. Here in Nashville, it’s finally starting to feel like the sunshine may actually be here to stay! I don’t know about you, but I’ve done just about everything I can do inside my house during this quarantine, so I’m feeling like it’s time to get things in order outside so we can start shifting gears and spending as much time as we can enjoying our patio and yard. I was doing a little shopping for myself, and found some awesome outdoor picks that I couldn’t not share with you all because they’re all so affordable! I hope you find something you need for your home and can get a great deal on it too! In other exciting news, this week we recorded our first “On the Couch with Julie” segment. We’ve been talking about starting this for awhile now, and we’re so excited to finally start sharing video discussions, interviews with special guests, and more- all from my ‘Couch’ (pun definitely intended)! We can’t wait to host guests to share with you from my actual couch, but during this time of sheltering in place, I’ll be interviewing guests over Zoom. This week I’m interviewing my friend Ranee Gilbert, a rep at Feizy, who is an expert on all things rugs. I get so many questions about how to size a rug for your space, what materials are most durable, etc. so I figured I would invite the expert herself to share her expertise with you! Affordable Art + More from JCI

Well hello, friends! I hope your Easter weekend was fabulous despite the circumstances, and you were able to enjoy time celebrating with your family. We did our best to maintain all of the Easter traditions with baskets for the kiddos, an egg hunt, and some fun Easter crafts at our house, but I definitely missed getting Gus and Marlowe dressed up and going to church! But we did have a sweet Easter at home, and I hope you and your family did too.

Affordable Art…

You may have seen that on social media we shared our Sunday 6, and this week featured some awesome affordable art that can be easily ordered online! During this time at home, a lot of us are focused on home improvement and decorating or redecorating our homes. Maybe sitting in the same spot in your home has caused you to notice that there’s a spot in need of something new, or you’ve had art on your to do list for awhile… but clearly art has been on the brain, because several of you have reached out regarding art for your home recently. There are so many great sources out there that sometimes it’s difficult to identify which vendors are legit and which pieces are actually worth the investment. So as an art lover, I picked a few pieces to share with you all. Click the button below to shop my picks!

43.png

1. Abstract Scribbles- Super affordable and a fun color.

2. Riding the Waves Print- I love this one!

3. Storm Swell Art- Can be used in a lot of places.

4. “Candy House No. 5”- Beautiful photography!

5. “Red Mood and Ridtipe”- Okay, so this one’s a little pricey, but we liked too much not to include. Linking a similar more affordable option!

6. Line Drawing Art- We use line drawing art with a lot of our clients! Very versatile.

JCI Art InspO…

Here's a little inspiration from some of our projects over the years! We hope this will help you in selecting and arranging art in your own home. Notice our use of abstract pieces and black and white charcoal sketches…

G. Grace Gallery

With all this talk about art, it feels like the perfect time to take a minute to share about my not-for-profit art gallery, G. Grace. If you haven’t heard about my gallery, I would love to share a little bit more with you! Our interior design office in the 12 South area in Nashville actually doubles as an art gallery. We feature some incredible artists, both local and throughout the U.S. who offer really lovely pieces. I started the gallery in 2017 in honor of my daughter, Georgia Grace Couch, who was born prematurely and passed shortly after her birth. Funds from all sales are split between the artist and Forrest Spence Fund, which support critically and chronically ill children in the midsouth. I’ll share a few available pieces below with a link to our site if you’re interested to learn more!

We hope this motivated you to fill that empty spot or update your own home with new art! have a fabulous rest of your week, and feel free to comment or message me on instagram with any questions, comments, thoughts!! See you next week!

Back on the Blog! - Making Your Home Office a Refuge

Hi friends! I hope you are all well and staying healthy from home. Clearly it’s taken a global pandemic and quarantine to get me back on the blog after about 4 years!! Life and business have gotten crazy, and with social media being as big as it is, I’ve forgotten how much I love to share with you all through my own blog. In the midst of all of the uncertainty in the world right now, our design business has changed drastically in the past few weeks. As of now, I am working solo with the help of my assistant to keep up with client projects until “normal” resumes. A big topic of discussion via the Instagram interactions I’ve had with some of you all, is the question of how I’m managing and how I’ve managed to turn my home into a suitable workspace for the time being. While the only recommendations for how I’m surviving are prayer and wine, haha, I am happy to share some tips with you on how you can transform your home into more of a refuge. Regardless of whether or not you already have a dedicated home office, or you have brought a desk into your bedroom, here are a few items you may need to feel like a boss! Click the image to shop these items!

My approved items that I’d recommend to make your home office a chic refuge:

1. plush desk chair

2. quirky desk lamp- with all these video calls, good lighting just became that much more important!

3. pretty vase- display some fresh blooms!

4. elegant picture frame- perfect way to display photos to remind us why we work

5. great candle- #mood

6.cozy throw blanket- who says we can’t be cozy while we work?!

Here’s a little inspiration from some of our favorite JCI office spaces over the years…

I hope our recommendations help you to make your home office feel more like you “office office” no matter what the space looks like. Times are crazy, but my hope is that we can all use this time to grow in many ways, to pursue passions, to learn, and to pick up old hobbies like I’m doing by writing this blog! Check out the picture below and let me know what you think about my home office view… My little girl, Marlowe, is a little athlete! This girl will climb on top of anything and everything the minute I look away, haha!

I hope you all have a fabulous rest of your week! Stay home and be healthy!! Check in with us next week for another blog post, too!

Nashville Flipped - Farmhouse Refresh - Episode 9

julie-couch-master-bedroom-Nashville-Flipped-episode-9.jpg

Working on the 1880s farmhouse just outside Nashville in Episode 9 for Nashville Flipped was one of my favorite homes. The first time I saw the place, it was literally a few boards and some remaining framing from the original home.

Driving up to the site, it still had beauty and charm, but apparently nothing on the inside had been maintained over the years.  Complete disrepair throughout the interior and front porch forced show host and flipper Troy Shafer to take the home down to the studs and build it back as if it had been loved and cared for over the years.

Since it sits on a pretty piece of property in a more rural area, I wanted to keep the exterior paint palette light, almost white. We painted it Sherwin Williams #7012 “Creamy.” Historically, most country homes had very little color and simple paint palettes unlike the more urban homes we worked on that called for brighter and bolder exterior paint!

Color Palette

We did want a fun “pop,” of color, so we chose a vibrant teal, Sherwin Williams #6942 “Splashy” for the exterior doors.

Colors used are one of the most common questions.  The interior color palette was SW “Iron Ore” for the dark doors, SW “Snowbound” for the trim and tones of grays and greens throughout the home for a cohesive, open feel.  I also used dark bronze tones in all the lighting to give it an overall casual and welcoming feel.

My Favorite Addition - Concrete Counters

The concrete countertop in the bath was my favorite addition.  Made by Santana Matlock, Abstrakt Concrete, it gave the home a unique, modern, yet rustic look.  It was just right for the farmhouse feel we wanted to achieve.

I’m in the process of building my own home (completed in June!!) and I commissioned Santana to make several pieces for me including a pedestal sink base and a floating vanity. He is also doing a countertop similar to the one we made on the show for my husband Mark’s bath vanity. Here is a video on Santana and his work.

Home Staging

For the staging of the home, I used a rustic farm table and neutral color palette with oatmeal linens and white so the architectural features and wood tones really stand out.

julie-couch-master-bedroom-Nashville-Flipped-episode-9.jpg

Shopping at the Factory at Franklin is always so much fun, and I was lucky to have knowledgeable shop owners helping me find just the right gorgeous old doors at City Farmhouse and a pretty Relik lantern for the home foyer. Used on staging day, the pretty, original art was loaned to us by Ron York, York and Friends Fine Art, a fabulous gallery in Nashville.

Nashville Flipped- Behind the Scenes on Episodes 6 & 7

I'm excited to share with you the "behind the scenes" of Nashville Flipped episodes 6 & 7. Don't forget to tune in tonight for the last two episodes of the season at 9 p.m. CST on DIY Network. Here we go:

Nashville Flipped Episode 6- Minimal Madison Mansion

In this episode we tackled a really small house in Madison- only 1164 square feet. It was thought to be one of the first "spec" homes in the area since it was built at a time businesses were just starting to open in Madison.

After Exterior of Nashville Flipped episode 6- Julie Couch Interiors

Since we didn't know the history of the family who had originally owned the home we decided to create an All-American cottage style for this home. Because we were short on square footage on the inside we decided to make the outdoor space become another living space. We maximized the backyard and increased the potential for parties and entertaining large groups or families.

Nashville Flipped Episode 6 home exterior

Though I'm not one to work from a theme, I think that the subtle nods to the red, white, and blue were just enough to give the little home big personality and charm.

Nashville Flipped Episode 7- Germantown Gem

This home near Germantown was the first home on the entire street to be renovated- and there was a sign in the window that condemned it as "uninhabitable." The crazy marble design on the front of the house was something I've never seen, and multiple walls had been added over time, creating tight and confusing spaces. “Bad features, bad lighting, bad everything.”

Troy always opens up rooms as much as possible to create flow and larger livings spaces- which is invaluable to modern buyers.

TROY SHAFER and JULIE COUCH Nashville Flipped

I really love the sentimental touches we added like the wallcovering we had reproduced for the parlor. Entering through the heavy wood door into that parlor truly feels like stepping back in time. I added modern white chairs and brass accents to update the look.

Most people love the charm of an old house, but truly want the functionality and amenities of a new home, so I'm happy we kept the charm of these two "makeovers," but gave future homeowners the bright, open, and beautiful spaces they are looking for!

Don’t forget to watch the last two episodes of this season tonight at 9 p.m. CST on DIY Network.

If you’d like to schedule a design consult, I’d love to hear from you. Please fill out the form below and we will get you on the calendar.[gravityform id="2" title="true" description="true"]

Nashville Flipped Episodes #3 and #4: Weaving Home History Into Design

Every historical house in the city has a story to tell says Nashville Flipped host Troy Dean Shafer; and, if the home in episode four could talk, our ears would be burning!

Julie Couch and Troy Shafer- Nashville Flipped

Nashville Flipped Episode #3

First, episode three was the renovation of a 1920s Craftsman Style Bungalow in South Nashville near a railroad freight yard. Troy did a brilliant job of adding Craftsman touches to the interior including the built-ins flanking the fireplace that look original.

Two tips you could try in your own home from this episode were the refurbishing of the old clawfoot tub and create a character piece which complements a home’s history.

I worked with a tub refinisher, Southern Bath Systems, to reglaze the tub and painted it to match the room’s tile.  I may never have another white tub!

As an homage to the railroad history of the home, I worked with my friends Brandon and Katie Eller, Hunter + Gatherer Society, on the custom kitchen island with railroad tiles as the legs - so brilliant! We have become such great friends since we started working together on these special projects. They also make custom furniture and design sets for T.V. shows, commercials, movies and photo shoots. And, they recently got married!

Honor your home’s history and you can’t go wrong.

Nashville Flipped Episode #4

In episode four, described as a 1926 Minimal Traditional, to me the home was a little hybrid Craftsman Tudor and desperately needed a charming front door to help set the tone for Troy’s incredible remodel. nashville flipped episode 4

One of my go-to sources in Nashville is Preservation Station where we found a round door with great hardware. nashville flipped episode 4 living room with rounded door

I also stopped by the Nashville Flea Market.  Held the fourth weekend of every month, we needed to find a few character pieces and came away with great fireplace andirons and a garden bench. Don’t be afraid to haggle a bit.  It was key for me in staying on budget!nashville flipped episode 4 flea market find

Whether your home is old or new, take the extra time to find those character pieces which reflect a bit of its journey.

Tune in Wednesdays to the DIY Network to Nashville Flipped. You’ll find inspiration and tips for your own home renovation project. I’ll also be live Tweeting at @JCouchInteriors so come join the conversation with your questions or comments!

Country Living Magazine Cover’s New Old House Project

As a long-time fan of Country Living magazine, earning their February cover featuring a beautiful new home I worked on was so exciting!   We gave this new Franklin TN home a little patina and age to achieve a more rustic, relaxed feel.

To share more of this gorgeous home and and lots of tips on how to create your own dream house, I'll be speaking at the upcoming Country Living Fair THIS WEEKEND! Details and a ticket giveaway are below!

Julie Couch- Country Living Magazine Cover February 2016

The February cover story was especially meaningful because the homeowner, Mandy Reeves,  has been a dear friend for almost 30 years. She has impeccable taste and had a very clear vision for her new home, built by Carbine & Associates in the Franklin area. So, how do you create an "Old" new house?  Here are my tips on adding age and interest to new construction.

  1. Incorporate vintage or antique architectural elements during construction.  For example, add old transoms over doors for extra height, shiplap to walls for texture and stained glass pieces for color.

    Julie Couch Interiors- Shiplap

  2. Display family heirlooms in a fun new way.  Pretty lace doilies mounted on natural linen and framed in lucite shadow boxes are given new life.  For extra impact use four or more and hang in a grid pattern.

    Julie Couch Interiors

  3. Add Texture! Consider seagrass floor covering, vintage or grasscloth wallpaper and reclaimed wood floors.  Find what you love and you’ll find a place for it.

    Julie Couch Interiors

  4. Create curb appeal. Add limestone, cast iron, and reclaimed brick to the exterior.  Also, bold additions like large antique planters to flank the front entrance are beautiful and welcoming.
  5. Befriend your landscaper.  Get advice on what plants grow quickly, stay green and endure unpredictable weather.  Then, add a pergola and plant wisteria at its base.  Within three years, you’ll have a gorgeous outdoor retreat that feels like it’s been there for ages.

These are just some of the tips we used to achieve that old farmhouse feel for the Reeves’s home. I’ll be talking about some of these elements and steps for creating a happy home at the Country Living Fair this Friday, April 22 at 3 p.m. at the James E Ward Agricultural Center, Lebanon, TN. Julie Couch at the Country Living Fair April 22, 2016

Nashville Flipped Premiere- Behind the Scenes

A 1904 Folk Victorian in Springfield, Tennessee couldn’t be that much trouble to renovate, right?!  Well, if you saw the premiere episode last night of the DIY Network's “Nashville Flipped,” you saw how challenging this renovation was even for an expert house flipper and show host Troy Dean Shafer.

As the official Nashville Flipped interior designer, from reproducing the intricate dentil moulding on the exterior to the game changing, vaulted ceiling, there were so many inspiring details which really got my creative design juices flowing.

The living room’s 1960s style fireplace was a fun challenge.  I went on the search for a great mantle. Simple but beautiful antique pieces can immediately transform a space.  The warmth of the wood tone and the perfect scale of the piece made it feel like it had always been there.  Of course, Troy worked his magic by removing the dated brick and setting the stage for the unique replacement.

The biggest discovery was the original wallpaper.  It presented a timeless color palette which served as the foundation for the home’s color scheme. In this case, simple pastels on a neutral background. This is an important element that I weave into all my projects in some way.  Find that one key element that you LOVE, and build your color story around it for originality and continuity.

A shared love of architecture and preserving these beautiful Nashville historic homes really makes this journey with Troy and Nashville Flipped so much fun.  Watching the first episode it seemed like so long ago, when in reality it has just been a few months. Troy and I, as well as the entire crew of the show developed such wonderful friendships.  Troy has a big heart, and even when we don't agree on design, we always agree on the importance of working together. We both share a passion for these old homes. And we have so much FUN doing it! I hope you loved the first two episodes and watch next week for more inspiration and preservation!

And speaking of fun, Troy and I hosted a premiere party for about 150 of our closest friends at Tackle Box Films HQ in Marathon Village. What a way to kick off this adventure!

God has blessed us over the past eight years beyond belief. Scarlett, our lead designer, may be the biggest blessing to our business but also to my life. I could write a novel about her kindness, but if you meet her you’ll know within minutes that she has the biggest heart in the whole world. Rachel has been a wonderful asset to our showroom and is able to juggle the craziness of client installs and leisurely shoppers.  She has great style and great taste- not to mention a sweet heart.  Amy is our newest team member and has seamlessly become an integral part of our team.  Her kindness and design expertise make her a perfect fit especially for our commercial projects.  And Jordan who has been with us for almost 3 years is the most proactive and hard-working  designer around! She is fun and funny, but she takes her role seriously and is fabulous working with our fabulous clients!

We had dozens of wonderful friends come out to support us, and we are so thankful for that! The showroom and design studio is complete, and we are loving working here!

Rob Bolin provided incredible live music and Jordan provided her specialty homemade J-Fo pimento.

Please stop by and shop with us! Monday- Friday 10-5.

To simply say I’m thankful today would be an extreme understatement.  After experiencing the most painful and joyful year of my life, I look back at the past twelve months and am in awe of God’s majesty and love for me.

Even in the midst of the most bittersweet moments, I find that I have far fewer answers to the “big” questions than I’ve ever had, but those unanswered questions confirm that my God is bigger than my human mind or heart can grasp.

My husband, Mark, and I lost our precious baby girl, Georgia, last year on December 5th.  She was born far too early.  And though she was perfect, she was just too tiny for this world.  Even as I type these words my eyes fill with tears, and my chest feels tight as it does most days.  Even though almost a year has passed since her precious minutes with us, my soul longs for her presence.

Yet as I write this, I have a beautiful sleeping baby boy snuggled in his carseat behind me.  We’re driving to visit our family for the day and show off our little eleven month old miracle, Gus.

Now when my alarm clock, Gus, wakes me at 7am each day I am truly excited to jump out of bed and climb the stairs to see his smiling face and kicking legs as he greets me.

Even though I often feel the weight of profound joy and despair, I remind myself that Gus is healthy and happy.  I try my best to embrace the moments I can hold his chubby little body to my chest.  And when he tucks his head into my neck, I melt.  These are the most treasured, sweetest moments I’ve ever known.

Mark and I have a safe home, our health, careers we enjoy, and most importantly we have our undeserved but cherished baby boy, Gus.   Thank God.

family friendly homes

In case you missed it, last month I was happy to guest post on the Nashville blog, Interior Canvas.  I shared several tried and true tips on how to create a beautiful home that you can actually live in!  Because frankly, if you're not totally comfortable at home, what's the point, right!?

On a daily bassis I answer questions from clients and friends about how they can "child-proof" their homes.  How can they keep fingerprints off everything?

In a few short words, Sunbrella, Slipcovers, and Leather.

But that's not all you can do; I have a few more tricks up my sleeve that I'd love to share it with you.  Read all about it on Interior Canvas here!

southern porch perfection

I was so pleased when the fabulous ladies at Style Blueprint asked me to share one of my projects with them.  Just in time for warm weather, they asked for an outdoor living space to show their readers.

And it just so happens that an amazing client and now good friend, Allison, has one fantastic space she was kind enough to let me photograph and show off to all the SB readers.

So, grab some inspiration from these photos, a glass of lemonade, and relax as you check out all the ideas we made happen for her in this amazing, newly added, screened porch.
